NMC OSCE Examination structure

The NMC OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) is a practical exam designed for nurses and midwives trained overseas or those reentering practice in the UK. The NMC OSCE Examination structure is divided into following main components: It evaluates their ability to deliver safe and effective care according to UK standards.

NMC OSCE Examination; The OSCE has 10 stations:

  • Four stations are linked together around a scenario: the APIE (one station for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation) for these 12 different scenarios out which one is asked
  • Four stations to test skills (two pairs of two skills)
  • Two stations to assess the candidate’s values and behaviors and evidence-based practice. (Total 15- EBP scenario and 15- PV scenario)

NMC OSCE Examination; For Exam

·        There won’t be any changes to the number of stations candidates will be asked to sit, but they may be presented with a different clinical scenario or skill which other candidates may not have experienced.

NMC OSCE Examination; Dress code for Exam

·        Clothing: Please dress as you would in clinical practice. In the UK, this is normally a clinical dress, tunic or polo shirt with smart trousers or scrubs. You must not wear jeans or shorts.

·        Shoes: Must be plain, flat, black and rubber-soled, enclosing the whole foot and not made of porous or absorbent material.

·        Fingernails: Must be kept short, unvarnished with no extensions or decoration.

·        Hair: Must be tied up off the face and secured with simple hair ties/bobbles above the collar of your tunic or polo shirt. Hair should be of a natural shade and style. Facial hair should be kept clean, trimmed and tidy.

·        Head scarf/turban: If you wear a head veil/turban, please ensure that it is appropriate in color (plain black or navy), and it must be tucked into the collar of your tunic or polo shirt.

·        Jewelry: Plain ‘ball’ ear studs are allowed to be worn (maximum of one per ear). No tongue piercings should be worn. A single plain band wedding/commitment ring is allowed. You must be bare beneath the elbow: no bracelets or wristwatches are to be worn.

·        Make-up: Must be kept to a minimum and must be discreet and natural.

·        Socks/tights: Dark blue or black socks with trousers, and flesh-coloured or black tights.

NMC OSCE Examination; Fees

·        The fee for the OSCE is £794. The reduced resit fee is £397 if you need to resit 7 or fewer stations.

·        If you fail more than 7 station then you have to appear full Resit

NMC OSCE Examination; Verifying your identity

·        You will need to show the test center your valid passport so that they can verify your identity. This must be the same passport that you provided earlier in your application.

·        Someone at the test center will also take your photograph for your ID that you need to wear while you’re there.

NMC OSCE Examination; Viva- one chance to rectify mistake during Exam

·        After the completion of a station, the examiner may ask a question to the candidate to assess their understanding of the topic. In case the candidate provides an incorrect answer during the station, they will be given a chance to rectify their response verbally.

·         It is important to note that a candidate cannot request a Viva, which is a process that is automatically applied by the assessor if the candidate fails to demonstrate sufficient knowledge or skills during the station.

·        Note- It cannot be applied to silent written stations

NMC OSCE Examination; Result

·        The test centers will email your results to you within 5 working days of the date of your OSCE.  

·        If you pass your OSCE, you’ll get an email with details of what to do next. 

·        If you fail your OSCE, you’ll get an email with feedback on which stations and elements you were unsuccessful in. This information will help you prepare for your resit attempt as you only need to resit the stations you did not pass. 

·        If your NMC Online account shows you were unsuccessful but you haven’t received your feedback, please contact your test center. We cannot provide feedback to you.

NMC OSCE Examination; Resit Guideline

·        You can take the OSCE a maximum of three times as part of your application, but you need to wait at least 10 days between each sitting. 

·        If you do not pass your OSCE on your third attempt, your application will close and you’ll need to start a new application if you want to register with us. You must wait at least six months before you sit the OSCE again and retake the 10 stations.

NMC OSCE Examination; Appeals

You may be able to appeal if you believe that the process was compromised during the exam or an irregularity occurred in the conduct of the examination.
