The success rate of applicants in the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is influenced by various factors, which are being investigated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in partnership with OSCE test centres and employers who support OSCE candidates.
The most crucial factor in determining the success of an applicant is the level of preparedness and access to quality support. The degree of support and quality of test preparation can substantially vary depending on the employer or recruitment agency that supports the majority of applicants.
Another significant factor, particularly for candidates new to the UK, is the duration of time available to them to adjust to the country before the examination.
During the settling-in and preparation period on the day of the OSCE, the pastoral care offered to candidates is of utmost importance. This period can be emotional and stressful for many candidates due to the high levels of pressure and responsibility that they face. In the past year, test centres have implemented various support measures, including the provision of OSCE mock exams, marking criteria, and top tips to aid in the preparation of candidates.
The CBT contains a numeracy test (which consists of short-answer questions requiring a numerical answer), objective questions and a theory test (which is multiple choice). The CBT can be taken at a Pearson VUE test centre, available in most countries around the world.
January – March CBT 2023
Between January – March 2023, a total of 10062 applicants took the CBT and 86 percent passed both parts, across all fields of practise.

As the candidate profile across test centres differs, it should be noted that there is no expectation that pass rates will be the same across test centres. However, the focus on consistency of marking/moderation across test centres ensures that the same candidate performance should achieve the same outcome, regardless of the test centre where the OSCE is taken.
