The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has announced significant updates to the Test of Competence Part 2 OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) for nurses and midwives in 2021. These changes aim to align with the new standards set by the NMC, enhancing the assessment process for healthcare professionals. Major Changes in the 2021 NMC OSCE
- Increased Exam Stations: The total number of exam stations has been raised from 6 to 10.
- APIE Scenario Stations: Four stations will be centered around the APIE scenario, covering assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Expanded Skill Stations: The exam will now include six skill stations, a significant increase from the previous two. These include:
- Two pairs of skill stations.
- One professional values station.
- One critical appraisal station.
Time Allocation for Each Station
- Assessment: 20 minutes.
- Planning: 14 minutes.
- Implementation: 16 minutes.
- Evaluation: 14 minutes.
- Skills Stations: 16 minutes each.
APIE Station Details
- Assessment: Inclusion of a full A-E clinical assessment.
- Planning: Writing of two care plans.
- Implementation: Administration of medication.
- Evaluation: Transition from a written referral to a verbal handover to another healthcare professional.
New Patient Scenarios for APIE in 2021
The updated OSCE includes diverse patient scenarios such as pneumonia, anxiety, UTI, asthma, chronic cardiac failure, dementia, leg ulcers, and diabetes.
Skill Stations Overview
Out of 15 skill stations, 10 are selected for the OSCE, including administration of inhaled medication, blood glucose monitoring, catheter specimen collection, fluid balance, intramuscular injection, IV flush, and more.
Launch of the New Test
The new Test of Competence commences from April 2021, with study materials and supporting resources available on learning platforms of each Test Centre. Detailed 2021 OSCE materials, including videos and support materials, will be released by Mentor Merlin in February.
