NMC OSCE Marking Criteria key Update – 2024

 As of July 2024, there have been several updates regarding in the NMC OSCE Marking Criteria by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Implementation Administers drugs due for administration correctly and safely

Administers drugs due for administration correctly and safely:

  •  Administers correct dose
  • Checks expiry date
  • Handles medication correctly.
Aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT)
  • Verbalise which hand is ‘clean’ and which will be ‘dirty’
  • Dip gauze in a saline solution and move from clean to dirty hand

No need to state that clean hand and dirty hand.

  • cleans wound from clean to dirty areas in a single stroke, taking care not to over clean the wound
Bowel Assessment Recommends specific action to be taken depending on scenario Correctly recognises Bristol stool type and proposes plan of care if relevant. Recognises the need to continue assessing the bowels.              
Intramuscular injection
  • Wear apron and gloves
  • Rub the site with alcohol swab for 30sec and allow it to dry for 30sec
  • Apply plaster
  •  No more apron and gloves require for procedure
  • States would check the cleanliness of the injection site. States that if the site is clean there would be no need to clean, however if required would clean with a swab saturated with isopropyl alcohol 70% for 30 seconds and allows to dry for 30 seconds
  • Verbalises offering a plaster to the person. (no need to apply plaster, offer the patient, if require then only apply)
Intravenous (IV) flush and visual infusion phlebitis (VIP) assessment Flushes cannula using a pulsating action Flushes the cannula using a pulsating action. If an extension set is to be used and a clip is in place, the candidate should unlock the clip before procedure and relock clip after procedure.
Oral Care Plan Recommends specific action to be taken depending on the scenario

Identifies the clinical significance of the scenario given.

  • For full marks, the candidate needs to indentify a minimum of six aspects of care relevant to the scenario given.
  • For partial marks, the candidate needs to identify a minimum of three aspects of care relevant to the scenario given

The major changes have happened only in below three stations:

      • ANTT – No need to state that clean hand and dirty hand.

      • Intramuscular Injection – No more apron and gloves require for procedure and no physical cleaning required
